Top 5 Achievements Made by India in Sports 2024
Ah, another year for India and its sports prowess. This year was a great year for India’s sports culture as we made some big achievements considering the Olympics, Paralympics, and more. So let’ see the Top 5 Achievements Made by India in Sports 2024.
Top 5 Achievements Made by India in Sports 2024
1. Paris Olympics 2024 – Solo
This year’s Olympics ranked as India’s third-best performance at the Summer Games, after Tokyo 2020 and London 2012.
This year we won 6 medals (1 Silver, 5 Bronze) which is one less than the record of Tokyo’s Olympics, Neeraj Chopra secured a silver medal, Vinesh Phogat reached the finals after defeating three opponents, and Manu Bhaker won two medals in the shooting.
Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in men’s javelin throw with an effort of 89.45m, now the only Indian athlete to win two individual medals in athletics at the Summer Games.
Manu Bhaker won bronze medals in both the 10m air pistol and the 10m air pistol mixed team (Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh), becoming the first Indian woman to achieve an Olympic medal in shooting.
Because of these and other such feats, India set a new record by winning three shooting medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with Manu Bhaker, Sarabjot Singh, and Swapnil Kusale contributing to this historic achievement.
This marked the first time India secured three medals in a single sport at any Olympic Games. Also, India earned its first-ever Olympic medal in the 50m rifle three-position event.
Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat became the youngest Indian to win an Olympic medal by securing bronze in the Men’s Freestyle 57 kg category at the Paris Olympics 2024 at the age of 21.
Manika Batra became the first Indian table tennis player to reach the pre-quarterfinals in the Olympics.
But that’s not all, we have more to come –

2. Paris Olympics 2024 – Team
Hockey
The Indian men’s hockey team came from a goal down to beat Spain 2-1 and win the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, similar to Tokyo 2020. This bagged back-to-back Olympic medals in hockey for the first time in 52 years, since Munich 1972.
The victory at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium also saw India secure a record-extending 13th medal in hockey at the Olympics.
With 10 goals, Harmanpreet Singh was India’s top-scorer at Paris 2024 while PR Sreejesh made crucial saves throughout the competition before calling it time on his international career with a bronze medal.
It was not just the Bronze, but India beat Australia for the first time in Group Stages since Munich 1972, it was a long wait but finally happened.
Archery
Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat achieved India’s best-ever result in Olympic archery by finishing fourth in the mixed-team event. They narrowly missed a historic win, losing 6-2 to the USA’s Brady Ellison and Casey Kaufhold in the bronze medal match.
Earlier, they were defeated 6-2 by South Korea in the semi-finals but secured their spot thereby overcoming Spain 5-3 in the quarter-finals and Indonesia 5-1 in the round of 16. This was the first time an Indian archery team had reached the semi-finals in any Olympic event.

3. T20 World Cup
If you are a cricket fan, do I really have to tell you what just happened this year? This T20 World Cup was a revenge journey for team India and the last tournament for many of the iconic players in this format.
India won the T20 World Cup for the second time after 2007. This tournament was filled with intense matches till the finale, first the ever-lasting India vs Pakistan low-scoring match, India vs Australia tasking revenge for the World Cup 2023 finals, India vs England tasking revenge for the 10 wickets victory in the last t20 World Cup (2022) and that intense finale against South Africa which went down the wire.
It was a rollercoaster of emotions with a few players announcing their retirements from this format (Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma) and Rahul Dravid as India’s coach.
The raw emotions everyone felt when we won were priceless as I watched it happen live with like-minded people, and the experience was one of a kind.
I know this was supposed to be a description of the achievement but I think by reading this much, you would get an idea of how big of a feat it was for every fan.

4. Paralympics – Solo
This year’s Paralympics was one of a kind for India as we secured 29 medals (7 gold, 9 silver, and 13 bronze), a ground-breaking record I think.
Avani Lekhara became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympic Games, defending her title in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 shooting event with a world record score
Dharambir and Parnav Soorma clinched a gold and a silver, respectively, in the men’s club throw F51 event. Dharambir also set a new Asian record of 34.92m and Praveen Kumar logged an Asian record to win the high jump T64 title and brought India’s sixth gold, their highest ever at the Paralympics.
Javelin ace Sumit Antil made history as the first Indian man to defend his title at the Paralympics, winning gold in the men’s javelin throw F64 with a stunning throw of 70.59m — setting up a new record.
With a bronze in the high jump T42 class, Mariyappan Thangavelu became the first Indian to win medals at three consecutive Paralympics. He won the gold medal at Rio 2016 and silver at Tokyo 2020.
Preethi Pal secured her bronze in the women’s 100m T35 race with a personal best time. It was India’s first-ever medal in a track event at the Paralympics.

5. Paralympics – Team
The armless archer Sheetal Devi finished in second place but later teamed up with Rakesh Kumar to achieve a world record score in the mixed team qualification event. At just 17 years old, Sheetal went on to make history as India’s youngest Paralympic medallist, securing bronze in the mixed team event alongside Rakesh.
