History about Chinnaswamy Sadium

M Chinnaswamy, who was the president of the Indian board from 1977 until 1980, and was involved in the administration of Karnataka cricket for close to four decades.

The foundation for the construction of the stadium was laid in May 1969 and the building began in 1970.

The stadium was earlier named as Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) stadium, as a tribute to former BCCI president M. Chinnaswamy later its name was changed to M. Chinnaswamy stadium.

The stadium was given Test status in 1974-75 and hosted West Indies in the opening match, although the stadium was only half-built.

1. It was early known as Karnataka State Cricket Stadium and later renamed as Chinnaswamy Stadium after the former BCCI president M Chinnaswamy.

2. One of the greatest players Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards debuts for the first-ever test match between India vs West Indies in 1974.

3. One of the greatest moments for the Indian team happened in this stadium in the 1996 India vs Pakistan World Cup Quarterfinals.

Where Vyankatesh prasad gave Amir Sohail his greatest sendoff in cricket and it was also the first day/night match.

4. In the year 1996, it was also used for the Miss World (1996).

5. There is a great big wall at the front made of 10,000 bricks, these 27 feet high and 15 feet wide structure, erected just a few steps into the Stadium, is a unique tribute to the home-born cricketer Rahul Dravid, who made it big in the world cricket.

6. In the year 2015 it became the first-ever solar-powered stadium, the roof-top generated over 4 lakh kilowatts of electricity over a year.

7. This stadium installed the “state of the art vacuum power drainage system” and it is 36 times faster and it does its job in 20 minutes and the stadium becomes good to play again.
