History of Hockey Game

The history of Hockey is buried deep down and the historical records show that a raw form of the game was played in Egypt 4,000 years ago and in Ethiopia around 1,000 BC.

Various museums show evidence that a form of hockey was played by the Romans and the Greeks as well as by the Aztec civilization several centuries before Columbus arrived in the New World.

The modern game of hockey emerged in England in the mid-18th century and the first Hockey Association was formed in the UK, in the year 1876 and made the first formal set of rules.

The history of Hockey Continues till the Olympics

The first Olympic Hockey Competition for men was held in London in 1908 with the following countries: England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. With the addition of Germany and France, the competition took place with six teams.

After its first appearance at the London Games, hockey was dropped from the 1912 Stockholm Games because of the host nation’s control over the optional sports.

The formation of the International Hockey Federation happened in the year 1924 and Hockey was given a chance for re-entry in Amsterdam in 1928. Hockey has been on the program ever since, with women’s hockey included for the first time in Moscow in 1980.

How to Play Hockey

Hockey is a sport where you use a stick with a curved bottom and hit the ball inside the opponent’s goal to score a point. Two teams with 11 players each try to score more goals than their opponents to win the game.

Players are not allowed to kick the ball or the puck (the game ball – for field hockey and – a disk-shaped object made with hard rubber which is used in ice hockey is called a ‘puck’) into the net or purposely hit it with any part of their body.

In the match, each team uses five skaters, three forwards, two defenders, and finally a goalkeeper. (For Ice Hockey)

In the match, each team uses 11 players which consist of forwards, fullbacks, midfielders, sweepers, and a goalkeeper. (For Field Hockey)

National Hockey League games consist of three 20-minute periods but if the score is tied after 60 minutes, the game moves to a five-minute, sudden-death overtime where the first to score a goal wins.

If the game remains tied after overtime, a shootout is held to finally decide the winner. (Just like a penalty shootout in football).

Roles of Players in Hockey Game

Forwards: Forwards mostly play between midfield and the opponent’s goal as they are the people who score the most goals for their team. They are also known to be called strikers and their main job is to work together to head into the opponent’s region and score.

Great forwards are unselfish, move quickly, and create spacing that helps their teammates to move forward and score.

Midfielders: Midfielders are also known as halfbacks and they are able to play both defense and offense as they are considered to be multi-taskers on the ground.

It is important that midfielders have high stamina because they need to be quick at switching from offense to defense which requires a lot of movement up and down the field. Midfielders must be ready to defend quickly if an offensive attack fails while being aware of the ball.

Fullbacks: Fullbacks are primarily defensive players. Their main role is to defend an opposing forward and keep the ball away from reaching their goal.

A successful defensive stop will result in possession of the ball back to the other side so their mid-fielders and forwards can score. A fullback should know where their opponent is constantly and support the mid-fielders when switching into the attack.

Sweeper: Sometimes coaches will have a single fullback play close to their own goal. They are called a sweeper and are considered an extra defense since they will stay back behind the other fullbacks near the goalie.

Their job is the same as a fullback, to defend an opposing forward and keep the ball away from the goal box. Sweepers are like another layer of defense before reaching the goal.

Goalkeeper: The goalkeeper is an important position on the ground since they are the last line of defense before reaching any end of the goal.

They must have quick reflexes and the ability to block hard shots with their bodies and sticks.

He is also in charge of communicating with their teammates (mostly fullbacks) about defensive strategies.
