Futsal the Other Football History How to Play
Did you ever hear about Futsal? No, you didn’t misread, I said Futsal, not football. If this is the first time you are hearing this then let us see Futsal the Other Football History How to Play.
What is Futsal?
Futsal is a variant of football in which 5 players play on each side. It is played on a smaller field than a regular football ground and also played indoors. The term futsal comes from the Portuguese ‘futebol de salao’ which means hall football (a perfect name for this indoor football I guess).
Unlike some other versions of 5-a-side football, the edge of the field is marked by lines, there are no walls to bounce the ball off.
Now you got the basic idea about the game then let’s move forward or should I say backward to see when futsal sport started.

When Did Futsal Sport Started?
The game was developed in Brazil and Uruguay between the 1930s by a teacher named Juan Carlos Ceriani who planned to originally play on a basketball court. In writing the rules he took the five-a-side team sizes and 40-minute match duration from basketball with that he also took the pitch and goal dimensions from the handball and goalkeeper rules from water polo. This is what we can call a hybrid sport. Crazy Thinking!!!)
Futsal soon spread throughout South America, where the rules were more standardized and the first international confederation was formed in 1965.
In the year 1989, FIFA took over all this as the sport’s governing body and held the first edition of the Futsal World Cup in the Netherlands.
The first UEFA tournament came in 1996, won by the hosts Spain, and there followed a full UEFA European Futsal Championship in 1999. Eight teams were involved in those finals and by the year 2022, there was a 16-team competition in the Netherlands.

How to play Futsal
The kick-off is the signal that the game must start. Unlike regular football, futsal has no offside rule. The attackers can go closer to the goal to score, unlike our traditional outdoor football.
Players play against each other in a team of 5 players each of which one player on each team act as the goalkeeper and the remaining member will fulfill their dedicated role.
One player will be the Pivot who plays offensively, a dedicated defender, and the remaining two players should play in the midfield known as the wingers.
(We will discuss the positions of players later on)
Kick the ball into play if it goes out of bounds unlike soccer where you throw the ball back into play, but in futsal, the ball is kicked back in.
The winner is decided as usually the team with the most goals wins and if there is a tie and additional time will be added. The first to score in the additional time wins the match.

Player Positions in Futsal
GOALKEEPER
The goalkeeper plays a vital role in determining the final score. Their job is to stop any shots on the goal from the opposing team and to stop them from scoring.
DEFENDER
Mostly the captain of the team. One who put the most effort both on and off the court. The defender’s task is to not let the opposition players to score and the one who helps out the goalkeeper at the rear end the most.
LEFT & RIGHT WINGER
The two wingers, one on the left and the other on the right. These two players are the two workhorses in the team. Usually, the two fittest players have designated the role of a winger with the idea of helping in the attack and also getting back to help defend as quickly as possible.
PIVOT
The one we call the scorer, the forward of the team. The goal scorer who holds up play. The star who attacks more than defense. This is the position given to the one who can score the most for their team. The striker and the main scorer of the team.

My Thoughts on Futsal
This was the first time I have ever heard about futsal. I just happened to see an anime recommendation while scrolling named “Futsal Boys”. While searching about it I was not sure so I searched about it and I found out about this amazing variant of football which is not affected by any climate issues and is played indoors with only 5 players like Basketball.
Even after all this I searched more and found Futsal has its World Cup tournament and it was being played from the year 1930 and I heard no one saying about this game.
Maybe there is no crazy about Futsal in my country so you can tell me if it is played in your country as well or not.
