Badminton is a sport played by either two players (singles) or four players (doubles) who use rackets to hit a shuttlecock (also called a birdie or shuttle) back and forth over a net. The objective of the game is to hit the shuttle in such a way that the opposing player or team is unable to return it over the net.
The game is quite easy to understand but needs good reflexes, understanding, quick decision-making, power in your shots, along with endurance.
Prakash Padukone is considered the Father of Badminton and it is the national sport of Indonesia.

History of Badminton
The origins of badminton can be traced back several centuries in India when a game called “Poona” was played. The game was similar to modern-day badminton, with players hitting a shuttlecock back and forth over a net using rackets.
The game was brought to England in the 19th century by British military officers who had played it in India. Badminton takes its name from the Badminton House in Gloucestershire, England, where the game was first played in its modern form during the late 1800s.
The first official badminton tournament was held in 1898, and the Badminton Association of England was formed in 1893 to govern the sport. A Badminton World Federation was formed in 1934 to oversee international matches after badminton became popular and spread in other countries.
Badminton was first included in the Olympic Games as a demonstration sport in 1972 and became an official Olympic sport in 1992. Today, badminton is played at both amateur and professional levels.

History of Badminton in India
The first badminton club in India was established in Pune in 1875, and the game quickly spread to other parts of the country. India hosted its first international tournament, the Thomas Cup, in 1949, after the Badminton Association of India was formed in 1934.
Indian badminton players began to achieve international success in the 1960s, with Prakash Nath winning the Scottish Open in 1961 and Dinesh Khanna winning the Dutch Open in 1965. Prakash Padukone, Syed Modi, and Pullela Gopichand achieved success at the international level during the 1980s.
In recent years, Indian badminton players have continued to excel, with Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu both winning Olympic medals in women’s singles, and Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy achieving success in men’s singles. A number of major international tournaments have been hosted in India, including the Indian Open and the Commonwealth Games.

How Badminton is played
Badminton is typically played either as a singles match between two players or as a doubles match between two teams of two players each. The task is to hit the shuttle over the net and into the opposing player’s court so they cannot return it before it touches the ground.
The game begins with a coin toss to determine which player or team will serve first. Servers stand on their designated service courts and hit shuttlecocks over the net to opponents. The receiver must hit the shuttle back over the net, and the players or teams continue to hit the shuttlecock back and forth until a point is scored.
Points are scored when the shuttle lands on the opposing player’s court, either because they were unable to return it or they hit it out of bounds. A player or team must win 21 points to win a game. If it goes for a tie then players need a two-point lead to win that game.
Players must follow certain rules while playing badminton, such as not touching the net, not hitting the shuttle before it has crossed the net, and not obstructing the opposing player’s view.
The shuttle can be hit with any part of the racket and must be hit above the waist. If a player violates a rule, they may lose a point or be disqualified from the game, depending on the severity of the violation.

Rules of Badminton
The rules of badminton are governed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Here are the basic rules of badminton:
Scoring: A match is played in best-of-three games, with each game played to 21 points. A player or team must win by two points.
Serving: The server must stand in their designated service court and hit the shuttle to the receiver. The server must keep both feet stationary until the shuttle is hit, and the shuttle must be hit below the waist.
Faults: A player commits a fault if they touch the net with their racket or body, hit the shuttle out of bounds, or hit the shuttle into the net. A player also commits a fault if they obstruct the opposing player’s view of the shuttle.
Let: If a serve hits the net and lands in the proper service court, it is a let, and the server is allowed to serve again.
Change of Ends: After every 6 points, the players or teams change sides of the court.
Shuttle: The shuttle must be made of feathers or synthetic materials and weigh between 4.74 and 5.50 grams. The speed of the shuttle is also regulated, with different speeds used for different levels of play.
Out of Bounds: The shuttle is considered out of bounds if it lands outside the court or hits the ceiling, walls, or any other obstruction.

Continuous Play: Players must continue to hit the shuttle back and forth until a point is scored, even if the shuttle touches the net or a player’s body.
Inbounds: The shuttle must land within the boundaries of the court to be considered inbounds. If a player is unsure whether the shuttle is in or out, they can challenge the call by asking for a review. Challenges are limited per player or team.
Service Court: The court is divided into two halves by a net, and each half is further divided into a front service court and a back service court. The serving player or team must serve from the appropriate service court.
Foot Faults: A player commits a foot fault if they step on the boundary line or enter the opposing player or team’s court before the shuttle is hit. If a foot fault is committed, the opposing player or team is awarded a point.
Timeouts: Each player or team is allowed a limited number of timeouts during a game. A timeout can be taken for various reasons, to rest or strategize.
Double Hit: A player is not allowed to hit the shuttlecock twice in a row. If a player accidentally hits the shuttlecock twice, the opposing player or team is awarded a point.
