History of Paralympics
The Paralympic Games are a multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities. The history of the Paralympic Games can be traced back to the end of World War II when a group of British veterans with spinal cord injuries organized the first international competition for athletes with disabilities in 1948.
This competition was known as the Stoke Mandeville Games and it was held in the town of Aylesbury, England, which included wheelchair basketball.
Over the years, the Stoke Mandeville Games grew in popularity and expanded to include other sports, such as archery, swimming, and athletics. In 1960, the first official Paralympic Games were held in Rome, Italy, which included athletes from around 23 countries competing in eight sports.
Since then, the Paralympic Games have been held every four years, in conjunction with the Olympic Games. The Games have grown in size and scope, with more athletes and sports added to the competition.
The Paralympic Games have also become an important platform for promoting disability rights and raising awareness about the abilities of people with disabilities. (This sentence feels different when read but the meaning is pure)

The Paralympic Games have faced some challenges over the years, including issues related to funding and infrastructure, as well as concerns about doping and the classification of athletes. With new technologies and innovations, more athletes with disabilities are able to participate in the Games.
Today, the Paralympic Games are recognized as one of the world’s largest international multi-sport events, with athletes from more than 160 countries competing in more than 20 sports. History of Paralympics in India
India first participated in the Paralympic Games in 1968, when a team of 15 athletes with disabilities competed in the Summer Paralympic Games held in Tel Aviv, Israel. However, it wasn’t until the 1984 Summer Paralympic Games in Stoke Mandeville and New York that India won its first Paralympic medal, a bronze in powerlifting.
Since then, India’s Paralympic team has grown and achieved success in various sports. India has participated in every Summer Paralympic Games since 1984 and has also sent teams to the Winter Paralympic Games.
India’s most successful Paralympian is Murlikant Petkar, who won a gold medal in the 50m freestyle swimming event at the 1972 Paralympic Games in Heidelberg, Germany. India’s current Paralympic medal count stands at 28, including 9 gold, 8 silver, and 11 bronze medals.

In recent years, India has made efforts to improve its support and infrastructure for para-athletes. The government has launched initiatives such as the Khelo India Para Games, a national multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities. The Sports Authority of India has also established a Para High-Performance Centre to provide specialized training and support for para-athletes.
Despite these efforts, India still faces challenges in providing adequate support and opportunities for para-athletes. Many para-athletes struggle with funding and lack of access to specialized equipment and training facilities.
India’s Paralympic team continues to inspire and showcase the abilities of people with disabilities, and there is hope that with continued investment and support, India’s para-sports scene will continue to grow in the future.
