1️⃣ The Munich Olympics Massacre (1972)
When it happened: September 5–6, 1972
Where it happened: Munich, West Germany
What was meant to be a peaceful showcase of athleticism turned into a horrific scene when Palestinian terrorists from the Black September group stormed the Olympic Village. Eleven Israeli athletes and coaches were taken hostage.
A failed rescue attempt ended in a bloodbath at a nearby airfield — all 11 hostages, five terrorists, and a German police officer were killed.
This tragedy changed how the world approaches security at global sporting events, leading to massive security upgrades for every Olympic Games since.

Where it happened: Sheffield, England

Where it happened: Near Medellín, Colombia
The underdog Brazilian football club Chapecoense was flying to their first-ever Copa Sudamericana final. Their plane ran out of fuel and crashed into a mountain, killing 71 of the 77 people on board, including players, staff, and journalists.

7️⃣ Colombian Goalkeeper Andrés Escobar’s Murder (1994)

Where it happened: Medellín, Colombia
One of the saddest things I found that could happen to any sports player while I was doing research for this topic, and I was literally shocked that this could happen for making a single mistake.
Colombian defender Andrés Escobar scored an own goal during the 1994 World Cup, contributing to Colombia’s early exit. A few days after returning home, he was shot dead outside a nightclub — reportedly by men linked to gambling losses.
Escobar’s murder remains a grim symbol of how crime and corruption can overshadow the beauty of the game.

Where it happened: Fujairah, United Arab Emirates
American open-water swimmer Fran Crippen died during a 10km World Cup race under dangerously hot conditions. Rescue teams found his body two hours after the race ended.

I never heard of a 10km swimming race before this one, really.

9️⃣ Eden Gardens Stampede (1980)

Where it happened: Kolkata, India
India’s fiercest football rivalry — the Kolkata Derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal — took a tragic turn at Eden Gardens. A heated foul sparked clashes among fans, causing panic and a deadly stampede. This caused the death of sixteen people, and many were injured.
